Enhance Literacy in New York
Evidence-Based Literacy Supports Equitable Learning
New York's literacy gap is widening as a majority of students are not reading at grade level by fourth grade. The Literacy Initiative, led by NYSED and the Board of Regents, emphasizes research-based instruction to reverse declining scores. District administrators are tackling inequities, while working alongside school leaders to implement state requirements (NYC Reads and NYS Literacy Initiative). Structured Literacy is the way forward.
Meeting these challenges requires high-quality and culturally responsive solutions that:
Equip every student to meet state literacy benchmarks
Empower teachers with the right resources to address the needs of students with dyslexia
Deliver real-time data progress on academic recovery
Address district and school leaders’ limited time, funding, and staffing
Build confidence for multilingual learners as they learn academic English
