Embracing the Science of Reading Leads to Literacy Gains in New York
The Monroe One Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in Fairport, New York, covers 10 different school districts in the region. Those districts range in size from a single K–12 school building to those with multiple different buildings.
The Monroe One BOCES uses Lexia® LETRS® professional learning to provide educators and administrators with the deep knowledge needed to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading. Educators gain the training and tools necessary to cultivate successful readers and expand reading equity, providing systematic and explicit instruction in evidence-based foundational reading components for all learners of all backgrounds. This practice directly supports the New York State Education Department’s Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework.
Educators across the districts have built a common learning experience that helps when collaborating with colleagues. “When they do the reading simulation in unit one of LETRS, it’s eye-opening for them and also something that they can refer back to when talking about students,” said Christine Treasure, director of school improvement for Monroe One. In particular, it has proven valuable in preparing students for the New York state test.
Discover how reading is seen as an equity issue for these districts, and how the practices learned through LETRS helps all learners gain equal access to content and high-quality instruction.
