Beyond the Labels: Unpacking the Diversity of Emergent Bilinguals for School Leaders
On the second day of Lexia® Literacy Leader Week, panelists explored the diversity of Emergent Bilinguals during a webinar with the theme, “Beyond the Labels: Unpacking the Diversity of Emergent Bilinguals for School Leaders.” Experts from various education sectors shared insights about differentiated instruction, integrating the science of reading, and collaborative approaches between ESL and content teachers to support multilingual students.
A key focus was understanding the diverse needs of Emergent Bilinguals, including long-term English Learners and students with interrupted education, and designing instruction to match their unique literacy journeys.
Panelists emphasized the importance of intentional collaboration among teachers and administrators, highlighting the need for culturally responsive practices that honor students’ linguistic assets and create belonging. They shared practical strategies, such as leveraging native oral proficiency through trans-languaging and concurrently focusing on language and literacy acquisition. Additionally, the discussion underscored the importance of using data to identify gaps, build on students' strengths, and improve Tier 1 instruction to prevent students from becoming long-term English Learners.
The webinar audience is encouraged to embrace collaborative planning, culturally diverse texts, and student-centered approaches to foster inclusive, supportive learning environments. With a focus on equity and leadership, panelists inspired participants to reimagine how literacy instruction can empower Emergent Bilinguals for academic and personal success.
