How Do Emergent Bilingual Students Learn to Read?
During the last 20 years, gold-standard research has demonstrated that the science of reading works for English-only-speaking students, or monolinguals. This body of research doesn’t address the literacy learning needs of Emergent Bilinguals, also known as English Learners, who comprise roughly one in 10 students in schools across the United States. As more children become bilingual, it’s increasingly imperative to not only recognize and address their literacy learning needs, but to also understand and celebrate the benefits of bilingualism in the classroom—and beyond.
