Improving Science of Reading-Based Literacy Instruction in Indiana
Indiana has made significant strides in improving literacy instruction through reforms and professional development initiatives like Lexia® LETRS®. With the goal of enhancing science-based reading instruction, the state has issued 2,000 active LETRS licenses, providing teachers with the tools they need to improve student outcomes.
The impact of LETRS training is evident in teacher satisfaction and student progress. In Indiana, 94% of LETRS-trained educators report that they can identify and target students' literacy needs based on the science of reading. Additionally, 91% of participants feel confident in delivering research-backed instruction, and 92% believe that the training has strengthened their ability to implement evidence-based practices in their classrooms.
The results speak for themselves: States using LETRS for teacher training—including Indiana—saw a 40% increase in the percentage of students on track in reading during the 2023–2024 school year, compared to a 25% increase in other states. These gains highlight the effectiveness of LETRS in driving meaningful improvements in literacy instruction.
Indiana’s commitment to literacy is further supported by recent legislation like House Bill 1558, which is focused on the science of reading. Lexia® remains dedicated to equipping Indiana’s educators, principals, and administrators with data-driven resources to accelerate learning and enhance student reading achievement. Ultimately, LETRS empowers teachers to create lasting positive impacts on literacy.
