Advancing teacher effectiveness so that Ohio students read proficiently
In April 2021, a new set of laws strengthening dyslexia support for Ohio’s children went into effect. The Dyslexia Support Laws, also known as HB436, apply to each local, city, and exempted village school district in Ohio. OH HB436 establishes mandatory professional development for identifying dyslexia and instructing students with dyslexia, as well as the creation of an Ohio Dyslexia Committee.
The Ohio Dyslexia Committee developed the Ohio Dyslexia Guidebook as well as criteria for professional development to meet HB436, which can be found on the Ohio Department of Education website.
The LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) Suite is professional learning that meets the OH HB436 requirements and provides educators and administrators with deep knowledge to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading.
- LETRS® is a professional development suite that allows educators to apply the science of reading research into instructional practice.
- LETRS® provides educators with the background, depth of knowledge, and tools to teach language and literacy skills to students in grades K–3 or older students who struggle with reading.
- LETRS® empowers teachers, providing skills and strategies that positively impact reading development for students of all abilities.
- LETRS® provides the literacy framework necessary to improve reading outcomes and enhance learning for all students.
- LETRS® fills gaps in teacher preparation education by covering all layers of language organization (phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax, semantics) and their relevance for teaching reading, spelling, writing, and oral language.
