Professional Learning for Literacy Instructional Leaders
LETRS® for Administrators enables leaders to effectively support educators as they engage in the LETRS course of study and work to implement the learnings in their classrooms. LETRS for Administrators is a professional learning opportunity designed to guide state, district, and building administrators and instructional leaders in creating adaptable and suitable literacy initiatives using systems thinking and implementation science. The program defines the systems and infrastructures required to successfully implement a sustainable literacy program aligned to scientifically based research.
Why LETRS for Administrators?
Literacy instruction requires all stakeholders to have a deep understanding of scientifically based literacy research and the critical subsystems that support it. Without knowledgeable administrators, informed instructional leaders, and collaborative teams, educators cannot sustain high-quality literacy instruction. There must be district and state guidance, funding, and professional development supports that are aligned to the research, with systems and structures designed to continue the effort. Without a change in educator preparation, state policy, programming, and accountability for school improvement, realizing growth in literacy outcomes for students is extremely difficult. Knowledgeable educational leadership must guide the change.
Knowledgeable Administrators
Literacy instruction requires all stakeholders to have a deep understanding of scientifically based literacy research and the critical infrastructures that support it. Administrators will be immersed in implementation science, systems thinking, and components of successful leadership, all of which will help augment the learnings that educators acquire in LETRS. LETRS for Administrators offers practical tools that enable leaders to implement best practices in literacy instruction and to create an adaptable and sustainable literacy initiative.
Empowered<br>Educators
When administrators and leaders participate in the two-year LETRS for Administrators program, they gain the knowledge they need to support educators in sustaining high-quality literacy instruction. The program provides the learning leaders need to effectively support and empower teachers who participate in LETRS to create sustainable literacy solutions and to increase efficacy in their planning. Administrators who know how to support elementary school educators in their LETRS instruction will achieve successful outcomes for students' learning.
Improved Student Outcomes
Research shows that only 35% of students are reading proficiently, but 95% of students CAN learn to read. Learning to read is complex because reading requires multiple parts of the brain to work together. Teaching reading requires a deep understanding of the science behind how we learn to read, why we spell the way we do, and how phonemic awareness and phonics lead to comprehension. While teachers are the most essential factor in student success, only about half of teaching institutions effectively prepare teachers for literacy instruction.
Key Features
