Superintendent Takes New Approach to Early Literacy Instruction, State Scores Soar
Superintendent Dr. Shawn K. Wightman of the Marysville School District reviewed options for a research-proven, blended learning solution for grades pre-K–5 that would systematically build early literacy skills for all students—regardless of their current abilities—and accelerate learning for students working below grade level. Dr. Wightman was particularly looking for a literacy program that would support differentiated and personalized instruction for every student to increase literacy levels without burdening educators.
After investigating various options, Dr. Wightman chose Lexia® Core5® Reading. Core5 gave the district the flexibility to implement a personalized approach to literacy to best meet the needs of individual students. Core5 follows an Adaptive Blended Learning model that offers explicit, systematic, and personalized reading instruction. This approach allows educators to deliver differentiated literacy instruction to students of all abilities.
Core5 was implemented in the district's three elementary schools: Gardens Elementary, Morton Elementary, and Washington Elementary. All three elementary schools showed improvement, but one stood out above the other two. Most notably, Gardens Elementary skyrocketed from the 82nd percentile to the 95th percentile, placing the school in the top 5% of Michigan schools.
