Literacy and Oral Language Development for NYC English Language Learners

Meeting today’s demands for literate multilingual learners requires a new approach to instruction. Hear from Lexia® expert José Viana, Ed.D., about the practices that will lead to growth in the language and literacy skills of New York City's English Language Learners. Dr. Viana is the former assistant deputy secretary and director of the Office of English Language Acquisition at the United States Department of Education.

This session is designed to aid NYC educators in implementing the NYS Next Generation ELA Learning Standards, particularly in settings serving linguistically diverse learners. Learn how to leverage NYSESLAT’s four English language proficiency modalities to develop both the skills and knowledge needed to read the words on the printed page and understand the text.
