Literacy in Context: Honoring the Strengths of Black and Brown Readers
This webinar, Literacy in Context: Honoring the Strengths of Black and Brown Readers, brings together educational leaders Kerri Larkin and Dr. Bren Elliott to explore effective strategies for empowering all students through equity-driven literacy practices. This session addresses the unique challenges Black and Brown students face in literacy development and how culturally responsive, evidence-based instruction can bridge the opportunity gap.
Drawing on decades of experience in education, the presenters discuss how the science of reading, culturally responsive pedagogy, and anti-racist practices intersect to create classrooms where every student feels seen, supported, and capable of achieving their full potential.
Key insights include the power of Structured Literacy to identify and address individual reading needs, ensuring students build strong foundations for lifelong learning. The discussion also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and amplifying the unique strengths Black and Brown students bring to the classroom, from resilience to creativity and scholarly potential. Teachers and administrators are encouraged to interrogate data, remove systemic barriers, and implement high-quality, evidence-based instruction to promote equitable outcomes for all students.
This session also highlights practical strategies, such as embedding representation in curricula and fostering inclusive family engagement. School administrators will appreciate the hands-on advice about how the science of reading can be a powerful tool in advancing educational equity for Black and Brown students.
