It Takes a Village: Keys to Creating a Culture of Literacy Excellence
Accelerating Learning Webinar Series (Webinar 3)
Putting the wheels in motion to build a culture of literacy excellence is no simple shifting of the gears. In fact, Dr. Shawn Johnson, director at Wake County Public School System in North Carolina, offered this advice during the webinar “It Takes a Village: Keys to Creating a Culture of Literacy Excellence:”
“Our leaders in the building, our principals, our literacy coaches, and our instructional facilitators, are the ones that we use to constantly keep this truck moving forward, or this bus moving forward, whatever vehicle we are driving to make sure students are successful….It is certainly an interdependent process, and it involves a lot of people and a lot of hands on deck.”
Hosted by Kerri Larkin, Lexia® senior education advisor, and featuring Johnson and Laura Colligan, Lexia programs director, learning and research, this webinar addresses how district leaders can thoughtfully consider each action leading to implementation by involving committed stakeholders, building organizational buy-in, and encouraging growth mindsets, just to name a few.
The conversation explores the implementation continuum and how change makers can build capacity through:
- Data-based decision-making
- Community/family involvement
- Literacy intervention instruction
- Professional development
- Leadership
- Universal Literacy Instruction
- Assessment
