Creating Confident Readers: Why Differentiated Instruction is Equitable Instruction
During this candid discussion, educational equity expert Kerri Larkin sits down with Liliana Salazar, national director of special education and student support at Academica, to break down the equity imperative of differentiation in the classroom.
Widening opportunity gaps indicate the need for more equitable literacy instruction. Every student deserves the same opportunity to become a successful, confident reader. By implementing an equitable literacy learning curriculum supported by technology, focused on differentiated learning, and grounded in the science of reading, educators can achieve literacy gains that ensure all students become confident readers and lifelong learners.
Adaptive Blended Learning leverages technology to provide a personalized learning experience while giving teachers the progress data they need to inform instruction. Adaptive Blended Learning meets students where they are and differentiates their learning pathway by identifying and addressing the individual needs of each student. With real-time data and tailored recommendations, teachers can help all of their students learn to read.
The science of reading ensures more equitable learning based on decades of multidisciplinary research. The Council of Chief State School Officers mandates the best way to ensure all students are receiving the reading resources and support they need to learn and thrive is to align curricula, assessments, and professional learning to the science of reading.
Equitable literacy instruction requires an asset-based approach grounded in what students can do instead of focusing on what they lack. Research shows an asset-based approach has a positive impact on students of color, students with disabilities—including dyslexia and other learning disabilities; students experiencing poverty and/or hunger; Emergent Bilinguals; girls; and more.
