Lexia-Hosted Roundtable: Science of Reading in Charter Schools & Networks
Lexia® and charter schools share a common mission. Together, we’re leveraging the science of reading to create equitable literacy learning opportunities for ALL students.
We gathered with literacy leaders and advocates from charter schools and networks across the country to discuss the equity imperative of science of reading-based instruction.
“How do we use the science behind charter schools in order to spread the word that indeed it is appropriate to use science [of reading] and make certain that you are challenging students, but also giving them the tools that they desperately need to be successful?” asks Frank Brogan, former assistant secretary of education (elementary and secondary), U.S. Department of Education. “We’ve seen the learning gaps begin to get larger and larger among our student bodies at every level and by virtue of that fact, it is time to retool. It is time to look at how we do old things in new ways and that includes the teaching of reading through scientific approach to help ensure that those learning gaps begin to shrink.”
“Bringing people from all the respective areas that influence the outcomes of education is really critical to the conversation,” says Casey Sullivan Taylor, policy director, early literacy, ExcelinEd. “When we can get all of the voices, and we can hear and listen and learn from each other, then we’re moving toward an opportunity to only increase the outcomes for students."
