Year After Year: Consistent Success on VA SOL Reading and WIDA
Leaders at a large suburban school district in Virginia turned to Lexia® Core5® Reading to address literacy challenges, and saw impressive student growth year after year, including for English Learners.
In two, two-year correlation studies, progress in Core5 correlated with WIDA Access and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Reading assessments. Summarized in an at-a-glance infographic, these studies show how educators at this district created a sustainable pathway for literacy improvement, empowering students to thrive.
From 2021–2023, Core5 demonstrated its ability to help students close academic gaps. For students in grades 3–5 who used the program with fidelity, the more progress students made in Core5, the higher they tended to score on the (SOL) Reading assessment.
Among K–5 students studied (95% identified as English Learners), 88% advanced at least one grade level of material in Core5 and saw strong correlations between Core5 level and higher scores on WIDA Access.
Across the district, after two years of using Core5 with fidelity, 96% of students ended the 2023 school year working on or above grade-level materials.
As of 2024, this Virginia Department of Education-recommended program is on the approved list for both supplemental instruction and intervention. Checking the boxes for both rubrics, Core5 equips educators with real-time progress data to identify struggling students early and provide targeted support based on the science of reading.
