Texas: Your Science of Reading Journey
The science of reading (SoR) journey for districts is a comprehensive process aimed at enhancing literacy instruction. It begins with Developing Awareness, where educators gather initial knowledge about SoR and compare it to current practices, using resources like podcasts, articles, and discussion forums. The next stage, Deepening Understanding, involves foundational professional learning and deeper engagement with SoR materials to build a stronger knowledge base.
Once a foundational understanding is established, districts move to Initiating Implementation, which includes selecting instructional materials and undergoing intensive professional development to begin applying SoR principles in practice. Extending Implementation further integrates SoR by aligning multiple tiers of literacy instruction, assessments, and professional learning with SoR standards, ensuring all instructional materials are evidence-based and aligned with SoR models.
The Refining Practice stage involves the sustained application of SoR best practices for several years, along with continuous monitoring and adjustments. This stage focuses on developing a comprehensive framework that spans pre-K to 12th grade, emphasizing data-driven decision-making and professional learning communities (PLCs). Finally, full implementation is achieved when a district's literacy instruction is fully aligned with SoR principles across all grade levels, ensuring systemic impact and continuous improvement in literacy outcomes.
