PowerUp Elevates Secondary Literacy Instruction In Caroline County
Challenges:
- Hitting reading intervention goals for students in Tier 2 instead of moving to Tier 3.
- Finding a literacy program that 1) aligns to the science of reading, 2) is accessible, interesting, and engaging for secondary students, 3) offers resources for educators.
Solution: Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®
Renee Hesson of Caroline County Public Schools in Maryland was alarmed by how many students were stuck in Tier 2 reading interventions—and risked being moved to Tier 3.
As supervisor of instruction for secondary ELA and reading interventions for grades 6–12, Hesson knew getting the right literacy program in place would make a huge difference for these students. When she discovered Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, she knew right away that it was a perfect fit.
Designed for secondary students reading below grade level, PowerUp covers word study, grammar, and reading comprehension in an engaging, age-appropriate way.
Enthusiasm grew as students worked through the program and tracked their progress. The embedded assessments took testing anxiety out of the equation, offering a seamless learning experience.
Less than six months into using PowerUp, the results were impressive: A 90% increase in students mastering intermediate word study skills, a doubling of grammar improvement, and more than 50% growth in reading comprehension.
“Lexia PowerUp speaks for itself,” Hesson said. “It’s my mission to help every child read proficiently, and I believe Lexia® will help us get there.”
With PowerUp, no student is stuck in intervention for life.
