Michigan District Sees Results With Science of Reading High-Quality Materials
Educators at a Michigan district recently demonstrated how science of reading-based, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) can dramatically improve student literacy. Seeking to ensure all learners reach grade-level reading proficiency by third grade, educators turned to Lexia® Core5® Reading, a blended solution designed to help teachers deliver structured, data-informed lessons.
Built around a science of reading framework, Core5 provides differentiated pathways tailored to each student’s needs while preserving teachers’ time. According to district Title 1 Coordinator Christine Cyporyn, the program’s adaptive approach “really was our gateway into Structured Literacy,” enabling students to progress toward fluency more quickly than traditional methods. By year-end, 84% of elementary students working at or above grade level had met Core5’s usage targets—an increase from just 40% at the year’s start.
Further strengthening literacy outcomes, many teachers paired Core5 with Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning, grounding their practices in evidence-based strategies for early reading. Research from Lexia® revealed that students whose teachers participated in LETRS performed even better on foundational reading assessments than those who used Core5 alone. This dual approach—Core5 plus LETRS—offered a potent blend of practical and professional support that reinforced students’ classroom achievements.
From real-time progress monitoring to a month’s worth of saved instructional time, Core5 helps teachers maintain high engagement and ensures they can quickly address student needs. As school leaders seek to replicate these successes, this district’s results serve as a clear testament to the power of systematic, science of reading-aligned solutions in accelerating literacy growth for every child.
