Lexia Fits the Bill: Meeting the requirements of the Virginia Literacy Act Legislation

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) is a significant initiative aimed at improving literacy outcomes across the state by emphasizing high-quality instructional materials and comprehensive professional development in the science of reading. 

The VLA outlines a framework for how this transition will affect students, families, and educators starting in the 2024–2025 school year. All K–3 students will be taught using the science of reading, with individualized student plans put in place for those struggling to meet literacy benchmarks. Families will receive additional support through online resources and can play an active role in their child’s reading plan as needed.

Lexia® Core5® Reading and Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® align seamlessly with Virginia’s standards, offering evidence-based, systematic instruction that fulfills the requirements of the VLA. These programs support the development of critical reading and language skills, ensuring students in grades K–8 receive the foundational literacy education necessary for academic success.

Lexia LETRS® Professional Learning complements these instructional materials by equipping teachers, reading specialists, and administrators with the necessary training in evidence-based literacy instruction. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) will support school divisions through a multiyear effort, providing tools, resources, technical assistance, and funding to ensure successful VLA implementation.
