Language and Literacy Benefits of Lexia English in California
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate how well Lexia® English Language Development® can provide benefits for Emergent Bilinguals in terms of both language and literacy development.
METHOD: This large-scale, quasi-experimental study was conducted in California. Emergent Bilinguals who used Lexia English Language Development for a school year were compared to Emergent Bilinguals who did not use the program. The two groups were matched in terms of previous-year scores on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC), gender, race/ethnicity and home-language. At the end of the school year, comparisons were made between groups on the ELPAC as well as the Smarter Balance English Language Arts (SBAC ELA) assessment.
KEY FINDINGS
- Emergent Bilinguals who used Lexia English Language Development scored significantly higher on the ELPAC than Emergent Bilinguals who did not use the program.
- Emergent Bilinguals who used Lexia English Language Development were more likely than non-users to increase Proficiency levels as well as reach Proficiency on the Overall ELPAC and Oral ELPAC.
- Emergent Bilinguals who used Lexia English Language Development significantly outscored non-users on the SBAC ELA assessment.
