Lexia LETRS Legislation Enhances District’s Core5 Literacy Success
Challenge: Ensuring a shift to the science of reading is sustainable.
Solution: Lexia® LETRS® Professional Learning
“They call it the ‘science’ of reading because, like any scientific concept, these methods are grounded in research and data. When we implemented LETRS, we knew we’d see results,” said Catherine Truitt, former North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Educators at Craven County Schools in North Carolina have faced unique challenges, including a large, transient military family population and a steadily increasing number of multilingual learner students. While it is often challenging to meet the varied learning needs of students who frequently move in and out of the district, Craven County leaders are bridging the gap with Lexia®.
With North Carolina’s rigorous evaluation system, it's crucial to implement effective solutions that drive measurable success. For Jason Griffin, executive director of elementary and federal programs for Craven County Schools, that success comes from a strategic and sustainable implementation of Lexia® Core5® Reading, now in the hands of Lexia LETRS-trained educators.
“We have been very intentional with Core5 and our professional development,” Griffin said.
Lexia LETRS Complements Core5
Griffin explained, “All the work we’ve done with [Lexia®] LETRS®, also ties in with Core5. We had Core5 first, and when we added LETRS, it was like lightbulbs went off. Teachers see all the connections. Lexia® has done a really good job, specifically Core5, with the correlation of all the different skills, and how that ties into LETRS. We were part of the earlier cohorts through the state, and now we’re doing cohorts for [Lexia®] LETRS® for Early Childhood Educators and [Lexia®] LETRS® for Administrators. We’ve got a sustainability plan with that, that’s also going to help with the work we’re doing with Core5.”
