Teacher Autonomy in Implementation Improves Literacy Across Middle School
Challenge: With more than 500 students in grades 6–8, the existing literacy program at Niles Middle School wasn’t working. Many students were still struggling with post-pandemic learning gaps. Assessments were time-intensive and laborious for teachers and didn’t meet student needs as well as they had in the past. Niles educators needed a more efficient solution.
Solution: Assistant Principal Leah Marsh introduced Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® and granted teachers the freedom to adapt the program to their classrooms. Allowing this flexibility gave teachers a renewed sense of ownership and inspired them to adapt to the needs of their students more readily. This was a success: Strong teacher support led to strong student engagement and impressive gains at Niles:
- 84% of students using PowerUp ended last year in the intermediate or advanced zones in the Comprehension strand
- 69% of students reached the intermediate or advanced skills in Grammar
- 74% reached intermediate or advanced skills in Word Study
As students began to excel on their individualized learning paths, teachers helped them celebrate their achievements with certificates and awards. In the future, Marsh plans to have teachers check progress reports weekly to further refine instruction in a way that’s responsive to real-time performance. Because PowerUp allows educators to respond quickly to emerging needs, students don’t have to wait until the end of the quarter or the semester to learn where they need work.
With myLexia’s real-time data insights, Niles educators refine their teaching strategies to support every learner most effectively—fostering a love for reading while helping every child advance their literacy skills.
