Right Solution, Right Time: Helping Emergent Bilingual Students Thrive from Anywhere
Find out how educators at the Henderson Hammock Charter School in Tampa successfully addressed learning loss and improved outcomes for Emergent Bilingual students with Lexia English Language Development™.
Henderson Hammock has the largest population of Emergent Bilinguals in the Tampa area. Approximately 500 of the school’s total enrollment of 1,200 students are Emergent Bilinguals, and this population grows by 15–20 students each year. District leaders realized they needed an engaging literacy solution for this burgeoning group.
The district chose Lexia English, and ESOL resource teacher Rhaiza Sarkan-Del Toro completed training in March 2020. Sarkan-Del Toro said Lexia English was the primary learning tool for ESOL students when there was fully remote learning. “It really saved the day for us and will be a big part of our program next year,” she said.
Her students and parents loved it and routinely asked for more levels and lessons. Sarkan-Del Toro was able to monitor her students’ progress on demand with the myLexia® educator platform and identify any students in need of extra support.
In fact, leaders at Henderson Hammock were so happy with the remote learning experience they planned to continue engaging their Emergent Bilinguals with Lexia English also during in-person learning.
