Students Lead Literacy Program Buy-In at Valley View Leadership Academy
Challenge: Stagnant ELA scores using mix of reading and intervention programs with extensive teacher prep and low student buy-in
Solution: Lexia® Core5 Reading and Lexia® PowerUp
In the 2022-23 school year, Valley View Leadership Academy in South Phoenix was using a mix of literacy programs—and getting mixed results. With an 83% Hispanic student population, they needed a solution to help their Emergent Bilingual students.
That year, Emergent Bilingual students started using Lexia English with Core5 or PowerUp—and students were demonstrably more excited about learning. Educators expressed their approval of Lexia as well, thanks to real-time progress monitoring and tailored resources.
Soon, the school decided to expand the use of Lexia programs beyond English Language Learners to include students who needed remediation or intervention. After success in that first year, school leaders decided to adopt Lexia across the board.
Thanks to principal Larry LaPrise and literacy coach Jessica Zimmerman, Valley View outperformed many of the schools in the district. The results speak for themselves: 87% of K-5 students using Core5 advanced at least one grade level of material and the number of secondary grade students working on advanced skills in PowerUp more than tripled in one year. For English Language Learners, the number of students reclassifying from English Language Learners to English Language Proficient is double the state average: 18% compared to 11% state-wide.
Educators at Valley View love Lexia for many reasons. Download the full case study to see how LaPrise and Zimmerman implemented Lexia, encouraged student and teacher buy-in, and achieved some of the best results in the district.
