Literacy Leadership: Essential Strategies for Capacity Building in Your District
Columbus City Schools, Ohio's largest school district with more than 44,000 students and 113 schools, has implemented a comprehensive literacy program focused on early literacy as a key goal. The district, known for its diverse student population representing more than 120 countries, boasts a highly educated teaching staff, with more than 60% holding Master's degrees.
In 2020, the district began shifting to the science of reading, marking a significant investment in literacy from pre-K–12th grades. This strategic shift, now in its fourth year, emphasizes foundational reading skills as a critical area for improvement.
A robust professional development plan supports this literacy initiative, providing extensive training for teachers, reading intervention specialists, and administrators. The district partnered with Lexia® to offer the specialized professional learning solution, Lexia® LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) for K–3 educators. This comprehensive training equips educators with the skills needed to teach foundational literacy skills effectively.
