Lexia LETRS Empowers ELL Educators in Arizona
The science of reading and Emergent Bilinguals—educators have grappled with the connection between this body of research and appropriate instruction for Emergent Bilingual (EB) learners for years. As the educational tide shifts toward science-backed instructional practices, understanding how EBs access language and literacy is top of mind for many educators.
Understanding how LETRS supports English Language Learners is important for students’ academic success. It is purposefully designed to help early-childhood, elementary, and English Language Learner educators and administrators become literacy and language experts in the science of reading. LETRS outlines how to teach the skills required for proficient reading and writing, specifically noting areas where English Learners may need particular emphasis.
Educational leaders have a duty to ensure all students, including Emergent Bilingual students, receive the academic and cultural support necessary for success. Educators have the power to shape the educational landscape, make a lasting impact, and create spaces where all students can thrive. School leaders can empower educators to enhance their skills and knowledge while advocating for comprehensive professional development opportunities. This discussion aims to provide academic and cultural support to EB students and highlight practical strategies promoting systemic, long-term impact.
