Lexia Fits the Bill: Meeting the requirements of Michigan’s Literacy for All legislation

Through its Literacy Essentials, the Michigan Department of Education seeks to improve literacy for Michigan students by strengthening research-supported instructional practices. Lexia® offers Michigan administrators solutions for implementing explicit and systematic instruction with fidelity and for supporting teachers with standards-aligned professional learning. 

This flyer explains point by point how Lexia® Core5® Reading and the Lexia LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) Suite meet the requirements of Michigan’s Literacy for All legislation.

Core5 is a research-proven program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for students of all abilities in grades pre-K–5. Built on the science of reading, Core5 provides students with explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction in word recognition and language comprehension. 

Students across Michigan made remarkable progress with Core5 during the 2022–2023 school year. At the start of the school year, 40% of students using Core5 material with fidelity performed at or above grade level. By the end of the year, this number had increased to 85%. 

LETRS is comprehensive professional learning designed to provide early childhood and elementary educators and administrators with deep knowledge to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading.

As part of Public Act 144 of 2022, the Michigan Department of Education is providing sustained and job-embedded professional learning about the science of reading. This opportunity is being provided at no cost to educators in Michigan through the LETRS Suite of professional learning.
