Lexia® Core5® Reading Benefits English Learners in a Summer Program
PURPOSE: English Learners are known to have difficulty achieving reading proficiency in U.S. schools. The study asked whether participating in a summer program using Lexia Core5 Reading could help overcome these difficulties and provide benefits to English Learners.
METHOD: This study employed an experimental design in which English Learners who completed third grade were randomly assigned to participate in an eight-week intensive summer program using Lexia Core5 Reading or serve as control students. The HMH Reading Inventory was administered as a pretest at the beginning of the summer program and as a post-test at the end of the program.
KEY FINDINGS
- English Learners showed gains in Lexile® scores on the HMH Reading Inventory following Lexia Core5 REading use as part of a summer program.
- Reading gains made by English Learners in the summer program were four times greater than gains made by English Learners who served as control students.
- For students who continued using Lexia Core5 Reading in the second year, ELs and non-ELs showed similar advances in tier status on aimsweb.
