Lexia® English Language Development is an adaptive blended learning speaking and listening program that supports students’ English language development through academic conversations. The software is designed to help Emergent Bilingual students in grades K–6 acquire higher language proficiency levels of English.

English Is a Global Language

English is a worldwide language, and everyone speaks it with an accent. In Lexia English, learners interact with 17 characters who have different home languages and accents, based on those found not only across the U.S., but also around the world. The program is designed to teach Emergent Bilinguals academic English through speaking, listening, and grammar lessons, while reinforcing the message that there is not a single right way to speak English. The program’s rigorous curriculum emphasizes the importance of proper English grammar as the groundwork for academic success.

The Thinking Behind Lexia English

The inclusion of accent variation is part of the program’s asset-based orientation, which values multilingualism and views it as a resource and talent. The program’s goals, then, are to empower Emergent Bilinguals to actualize their gifts and strengths, and to support teachers in building learning around students’ existing capabilities and knowledge. 

Students’ accents, similar to those of the program’s characters, are valued, and their unique backgrounds and skill sets are honored.
