Recognition Matters: Virginia Middle School Empowers Adolescent Readers With Data-Driven Instruction and Celebrations of Success
Reading specialist Nancy Sindle of Shirley Heim Middle School in Stafford, Virginia, used Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® to create a culture of goal setting and recognition among teachers and students. PowerUp’s real-time data helped Sindle stay in touch with where students were working in partnership with teachers to support learning and build lesson goals.
“What’s so great about Lexia PowerUp is the teachers can see where the kids are working,” Sindle said. “They can see the progress. They can see the lack of progress. They can see where students are struggling. The ability for a teacher to click on a name, and drill into the data, and then address where a student needs help with specific resources, no other program is like it.”
At Shirley Heim Middle School, PowerUp has not only helped students grow their reading skills from foundational to intermediate and advanced levels, but has also kept teachers and students connected and engaged. The results have been evident in reading scores, as well as in student self-esteem. This example shows the power of quality instruction, thoughtful leadership, and careful implementation. Sindle’s impressive results inspired the district to invest in the program. Learn how Sindle and her teachers implemented PowerUp to make a difference for their students.
