Description

Instructions for using the Lexia Data Monitor to back up and repair a database.

Solution

The Lexia Data Monitor is a tool available for download in our downloads area, which is designed to run on the server (not a student workstation) and act as a frontend for performing tasks related to the Lexia Server software, such as starting and stopping the database service, repairing the database, and backing up data. The Data Monitor (LDM) is an optional component, and is not provided on the Lexia product CD's.

The LDM is available for Windows (running on XP, 2000, and 2003 systems) and Mac OS X (running on 10.2.8 and up). Once downloaded and installed, the program will by default be placed into C:\Program Files\Lexia Data Monitor on Windows, and Macintosh HD: Applications: Lexia Data Monitor on Mac OS X.

Installation of Lexia Data Monitor 1.71

Unzip the contents of the file you downloaded to a folder called Lexia Data Monitor wherever you choose, on the server where LexiaServer is installed. (Lexia recommends C:\Program Files for Windows, and Macintosh HD:Applications for Mac OS X.)

Root User Login Prompt (OS X Only)

Launching the program on Mac OS X will bring up the following prompt, which does not appear on Windows. The OS X version of the software must be run from the Root account on the machine. If no Root account has been created on the server, you will need to follow Apple's instructions to create one first.

The Status Tab

Windows users will be brought directly to the Status tab of the LDM, and OS X users will see the same tab after entering their Root account password. The Status tab provides a graphical indicator of the database service status- if the service is down or off, the indicator will appear red. If the service is up and running, the light will appear green. Clicking the Start and Stop buttons will toggle the service status.

It is necessary to temporarily stop the database service sometimes. For instance, if Lexia support requests that you send your database files in, the service must be stopped prior to copying them out and e-mailing or FTPing the files, otherwise an error message will appear, saying that the files are locked and in use by the service.

The Utilities Tab

The second tab is the Utilities tab. The Utilities tab contains buttons to perform backups and repairs of the database.

To repair a database, click the Compact/Repair button. You will be prompted first for the location you wish to save a backup of the data to- you do not need to manually run a separate backup first.

After the backup finishes, you will see a confirmation dialog.

The repair process will then begin. A progress bar will display in the lower left corner of the LDM, and any students who are connected to the database will be kicked out of Lexia. You may see a confirmation dialog appear, notifying you that students may be using Lexia before this happens. This dialog may appear even if no students are actively using the software. This may occur when students have disconnected without signing out (after a crash, for example), and the database still has a record of the student being connected. As part of the repair process, any "orphan" sessions such as these are cleaned out.

After the repair is complete, you should see a confirmation dialog stating that the database has been successfully compacted and repaired. If you receive any error messages, contact Lexia support immediately, and be prepared to zip up and send us a copy of the backup created earlier in the process.

The Restore Database button can be used to restore the database from a backup created with the Backup Database procedure (or a backup created by the Compact/Repair process).

Compact/Repair Switches

These switches will affect the behavior of the Compact/Repair and Backup processes.

The Create XML switch is only used by Lexia under special circumstances. It should remain unchecked otherwise.

If available, the Capitalize Spanish checkbox will convert any accented characters in student names and usernames to uppercase characters as part of the repair process. This helps with a flaw in the database in dealing with lowercase accented characters.

The Compress Backup option will zip the resulting backup, as opposed to placing the files unzipped into a dated folder.

The Connections Tab

The Connections tab is used to place a Connection File issued by Lexia onto the server. This can also be done manually by taking the Connections File and placing it into the LexiaServer\Licenses folder. To place the file using the LDM instead, browse to the file and then click the Install Connection File button.

The Parameters Tab

The Parameters tab is only available on the Windows version of the LDM. It allows you to make changes to the LexiaServer\lexiaserver.ini configuration file directly through the LDM, instead of opening it in a text editor.

Port is the port that the database is offered up on. The default is 51773. Any firewalls on your server and/or client machines must have an exception created to allow traffic on this port.

Disable DNS should usually be set to 1. If set to 0, poor response time may occur.

Threads is the number of concurrent processing threads used by the server software. The maximum value is 15. If threading is not supported, this value is ignored.

MaxClientTimeout is the number of minutes a client can remain connected if not actively in use. The default value is 80. After this period, the connection will be closed and the client disconnected.
