Impact of Lexia® Core5® Reading on Hispanic Students
PURPOSE: Given the growing numbers of Hispanic students in the United States and the relatively low percentage of these students who are able to read proficiently in English, it is of utmost importance to identify effective forms of reading instruction for them. This report summarizes research studies showing the benefits of Lexia® Core5® Reading for Hispanic students.
METHODS: The methods employed in these studies include experimental and quasi-experimental designs as well as correlational approaches. The measures consist of progress within Core5 and performance on standardized reading assessments.
KEY FINDINGS
- In a sample of more than 4,500 Hispanic students, the percentage of students working on literacy skills in/above grade level increased from 35% to 71% after one year of Core5 use.
- Levels reached in Core5 by Hispanic students were significantly correlated with scores on end-of-year reading assessments.
- An external study reported that after one year of Core5 use, Hispanic students were able to close the opportunity gap by a substantial margin.
- Hispanic students using Core5 significantly outgained non-Core5 users on a standardized reading test after only a half year of program use.
